About Jonesboro Georgia
Jonesboro is a city in Georgia, United States.
Jonesboro lies as the county seat of Clayton County in the state of Georgia. The county is in the mid-northwest portion of the state, and Jonesboro lies just in the middle of the county. It covers a land area of just under three square miles of land, less than ten percent of it being water. It sits at an elevation of nine hundred feet, and has a meager population. As of the last census, the population of the city came out to be just under five thousand people, 4,724. In the original spelling of the name, Jonesboro used to be called Jonesborough well throughout the Civil War era. The final battle during the Atlanta campaign was fought in Atlanta, forcing the mayor of the city to surrender at Marietta in early September of the year 1864. The fall of Atlanta helped establish a decisive victory for the Union army and helped Lincoln gain a second term in the presidency. The Confederacy fell the following year.
As of the last census records taken in 2000, there were just about 3,829 people in 1,446 households. Of that statistic, there are just over one thousand families in the city. The density of that turned out to be just about 1,477 thousand people per square mile. The racial composition of the Jonesboro city demographic, despite popular belief, is less than ninety percent white. 72% of the population was AFrican American, with only twenty percent being white. Less than one percent were Native American, Asian, and Pacific Islander. Hispanics or Latinos came out to be about eight percent of the population. In the city the population spread out age-wise as thirty percent under the age of eighteen, ten percent from eighteen in twenty-four age range, thirty percent from twenty-five to forty-four, and twenty percent from forty-five to sixty-four.
