About Atlantic Beach Florida
Atlantic Beach is a city in Florida, United States.
Atlantic Beach has had a long history of fresh starts after disaster. The first movement into the area is credited to Henry Flager in 1900, who established a railroad station where the Adele Grage Cultural Center is today. After the station, Flager built the Continental Hotel between Jacksonville Beach and Mayport, but the whole town was left abandoned when Word War I erupted. The hotel soon burned down afterward.
After the war, Atlantic Beach was slowly repopulating, maintaining a municipal government like its neighboring beaches (Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach, and Ponte Vedra).
The biggest developments that brought people to Atlantic Beach was the Mayport Naval Station and the Matthews Bridge. The bridge connected both sides of Jacksonville split by the St Johns River, allowing easy access to the coast and the beaches that reside there.
Among the several Jacksonville Beaches, Atlantic Beach is the smallest, encompassing a total area of 13 square miles but having only 3.5 square miles of land. The rest of the 9.5 square miles is water.
Since the last census, Atlantic Beach reported a population of 13,368 people, 5,623 households, and 3,643 families. The population density turned out to be 3,584 per square mile. Of the 5,623 households, 28% of them had children under the age of 18, 49% were married couples, and 12.4% had were female householders without a husband. The other 35% were non-families. Despite Atlantic Beach being mostly a resort city, the age dispersion of the city came out to be 22.5% of the population under 18, 7% from 18-24, 30.9% from 25-44, and 24.3% 45-64. The remaining population of 15.4% were age 65 or older.
