Organic and inorganic lawn care have the same objective in mind. Grow greener, healthier grass. However, organic lawn care has several great benefits, and is overall safer than inorganic lawn care. Especially when children and pets are involved.
It’s true, pesticides and other inorganic lawn care applications can be dangerous for children. This infographic does a great job at explaining the key differences between organic and inorganic lawn care.
Organic fertilizers can be made out of manure, compost, bat guano, cottonseed meal, urea, fish, feathers, alfalfa and many other naturally occurring ingredients.
Inorganic fertilizers are made out of ammonium sulfate, potassium nitrate, superphosphate, potassium chloride, and potassium sulfate.
Organic nutrients often cost more. So that is a major deterrent for many individuals that want to incorporate organic lawn care into their lives. A second downside of organic lawn care is that the slower release nutrients may take longer to green-up the lawn.
The risks of inorganic lawn care are mostly related to issues of health. Inorganic lawn care is especially risky for pets and children that may often be in the lawn. Inorganic lawn care products may increase the risk for certain types of cancer. They have also been linked to nervous system disorders, ADHD, Parkinson's and asthma.
Although inorganic fertilizers are cheaper and often act faster, they are detrimental to the lawn in the long run. Synthetic fertilizers are often less effective at being “bio-available” to the lawn. Which means, even if a synthetic fertilizer has more nutrients. They are unlikely to actually get absorbed by the lawn and simply get washed away the next time it rains.
Inorganic fertilizers may not only harm children and pets, they can also harm the environment. Synthetic lawn ingredients pose a risk to the environment they are spread in, and their production results in the creation of many toxic by-products.
