Needing your Lawn Cut?
This Pro's Story
I have been in the landscaping industry for a long time, getting my start working for the largest company in Franklin for several years together. When I first started there the lawn maintenance side of their operations was pretty small and needed some work. I worked to build up that part of the company from 75 weekly lawn mowing clients around Brentwood and Franklin Tennessee to over 300. Working there for several years I learned the landscaping trade, how and why to do a quality job, and how to keep lawn clients happy. Once I saw that I could grow a landscape operation I gained confidence to take the plunge and start my own landscaping business based out of Spring Hill Tennessee. First getting started opening up Mercury Greens Landscaping was a leap of faith. I left the landscaping company I had worked so many years for and started my company with money from my last check. I had 1 customer that I had been cutting since I was 18 years old. All of our growth has been word of mouth , people seeing us work and asking us to begin taking care of the lawn maintenance for their lawns. In a weeks time we have at least five people ask us to quote their yard mowing because they will see the job we are doing and want their yard to look as good as the one we are doing. We believe that's the way to earn business. Sure we might be a few dollars higher for the lawn mowing, but we spend extra time and give attention to detail like the weedeating, trimming , and weeds in the beds. It could be some details in the lawn that the homeowner doesn't even recognize, but when we show up and do our job that's when they notice. One major thing we do different is spray roundup on the weeds in the curbs and asphalt, and we will spray the weeds in the beds to get them under control. In the end it makes our work look better so that's how we earn a client's business. We find it's easier to do good work and earn more lawn accounts that way rather than waste money on advertising. Our motto is to do good quality work every time and earn lawn and landscaping business in middle Tennessee that way.
Primarily we focus on the weekly mowing visits, but we also offer about 40 different services. I am running all of the lawn mowing accounts, and Mack focuses on the landscaping projects , tear outs, irrigation system work, renovations on landscaping, trimming, mulching, pine straw etc.
Most of the time when a new homeowner calls us to renovate their landscaping they do not know what they want, so that's where we come in and help from the idea stage to the finished landscape job. They are not familiar with the types of plants that fit well in the middle Tennessee climate, so we will show them pictures of what the plants will look like in their mature state so they know what they are buying when they hire us for the landscaping renovation.
While we really enjoy landscaping renovation projects, I am focused on taking care of our weekly lawn mowing clients that we earn on GreenPal. Recently I mowed a lawn in Franklin off of Liberty Pike in the McKays Mill neighborhood in Franklin, TN. When I showed up it was overgrown, grass had grown about 2’ tall and into the little patio. You could barely see the steps to get onto the patio. Most lawn service companies would leave and not bother with it, but we believe in taking care of the customer and earning the customer’s business. So I went ahead and mowed it. Usually a lawn in McKays Mill takes 25 minutes to mow, however, this mowing took an hour.
I believe in taking care of the customer and earning their business for weekly mowing. All the time I will do things that other companies won't do to earn their business. When someone compliments my work it makes me feel good, and then my work speaks for itself.
Other lawn service companies in Franklin will blow grass in the mulch beds, or do a poor job weedeating. I picked up a new client recently and their last company was mowing for $35 , I could only do it for $40. Sure we are $5 a cut more but you get a lot more for that $5. When I finished, the customer told me that their yard had not looked that good in years, and that makes my day. It's why I do what I do. I enjoy the landscaping profession, because it's instant gratification to me, and when someone else sees what I do and then compliments me for it, that really makes me happy.
We service all over the Nashville area from south of Franklin in the Spring Hill area. Recently we just landed a contract for a business near the airport on Murfreesboro Road. So we go all over middle Tennessee. My GreenPal customers are all over Nashville. Whenever we get a customer on GreenPal we will try to meet them when we mow the first time. For instance I am in East Nashville on Tuesdays on a normal week , around Donelson Pike and Briley Pkwy on Wednesdays and north Nashville on Thursdays. So I can pick up GreenPal customers in most areas around Nashville and fit them into my route when I am already servicing other customers in their neighborhood..
How many years have you been in landscaping business, and what inspired you to get started?
Mercury Greens was started in 2009. The owner of the company though has been in the industry for 20 yrs. Working in all aspects of landsacape, hardscape, oudoor living areas, lighting & irrigation. After many years of honing his craft he felt he had a fresh approach to the business that was unseen and thus Mercury Greens was founded.
How does your work stand out from other lawn service companies in the area?
Mercury Greens mowing service stands out from most companies because we do detailed mowing always going over the lawn atleast twice. Then we meticulously trim all areas needed and edge all appliable areas. We also clean blow all traffic areas and anything else that may get grass in them. Finally we spray weeds in landscape areas and traffic areas for free as a gift to our customers!
What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
That there will be a learning curve of their property for the company and to communicate any issues they may have with their provider. This insures they are happy with the service. Also understand that the weather determines the schedule and that if it rains the week that they are scheduled the service day will most likely change.
What do you like most about the lawn care industry?
The gratification of a job well done. The privilege of not having to work at the same place everday. Enjoying being outside in beautiful middle Tennessee. And most importantly the relationship you build with your customer, helping them make their property anything they could dream of!
What areas do you mainly service?
We service all of Davidson and Williamson counties.
