Needing your Lawn Cut?
This Pro's Story
Martin's Mowing is a family owned, husband and wife business. I have been mowing lawns since I was a young man, but didn't start mowing for a living until about seven years ago when I started working for a Hendersonville, Tn lawn service.
I had been laid off from my customer service job back when the economy took a nose dive, and found work with a lawn service. I was immediately excited to go to work everyday because of how much I love being outside. Then, I started experiencing the customer service side of lawn mowing, and was forever hooked. I didn't expect that to be my overall favorite part, but that is what happened. Some of our customers were home bound for medical reasons, and they would look forward to seeing us mow their lawns once a week. I started looking forward to seeing them, too, and wanted to find other ways of helping. So I would move heavy objects for them, or feed their pets and play with them, too. When I realized I could be doing this with my own lawn service company, I decided to work toward it.
It took me about two years to have enough money to start buying good quality, commercial lawn equipment. Right after I bought my trailer and lawn mower, my former employer decided to downsize his service, and was kind enough to get some of his customers to agree to become my customers. I wasn't fully ready to call myself a company, but was capable of providing great service to them, so that's what I tried to do.
So far, they have all stuck with me. I think they know that I really care about them as people and want to help as best as I can. One of my customers is single mother with five children. She doesn't really have time to keep up with her yard, but her kids need the space to play. So, I make sure to keep it cut often enough that they can play without worry of bugs or unseen objects, but I don't try to get her to cut it so often that it breaks her budget. I also try to help her move her garbage cans off the road and keep the kids' toys safely together in the yard. I don't just love helping kids either; pets are special to me too. I have several customers that need me to watch out for their dogs and not let them out of the fence, so I make sure they are safe while I mow and that I remember to lock the gates back properly.
I like to give my customers personalized attention. I think that over time they start to just rely on me, and that's what I want. It makes me feel good to know that I'm helping them. While I do care about the health of the lawns, I care more about the happiness of the people. I balance their lawncare needs on the needs of the grass and the needs of their budgets.
Other services insist on mowing at a certain frequency, and if it's the customers' mowing day, they mow whether or not the grass is really tall enough or not. I don't do that. In fact, that is another way I personalize service. I will either text, call, or email the day before the customer would regularly have service, and ask if they want their lawn cut. If they say yes, then I let them know when I will be at their house. If not, then I will call again the next time their service day rolls around to ask again. I would never show up unexpected, and I would never ever cut a lawn that didn't need to be cut.
Now that I have a fully equipped lawn service, and about a dozen regular customers, I decided it was time to select a name and start growing. That's when I brought my wife into the company. She has a rich background in marketing and advertising, so I recruited her in July 2015. Since then, we officially became Martin's Mowing, and have so far earned a handful more customers that have all called me back for repeated services, and I could not be more grateful.
We mow in the Inglewood, Madison, East Nashville, Lakewood, Donelson, Tennessee areas and all areas in between. We also provide shrub pruning, herbicide application, fertilizer, and overseeding. We hope you will give us a try and let us personalize service for you too.
How many years have you been in landscaping business, and what inspired you to get started?
I have been in the lawn maintenance business for about seven years now. I got started because I love being outdoors and improving the beauty of the spaces around me.
How does your work stand out from other lawn service companies in the area?
I pay attention to details. Some people like it super short, others a little taller. I do what the customer wants, and if they don't specify, then I make sure it's done how I would want it. I never just top off the grass to make sure I can come back the next week. I take care of my customers, and if they wish I had done something differently, they know they can tell me and I will make it right.
What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
I would tell the homeowner to make sure the lawn service will give you personal attention. You need to know they will answer the phone, listen to your needs, and give you what you want and not whatever they want to sell you.
What do you like most about the lawn care industry?
The best part of the industry for me is taking care of my customers. I love knowing that I'm providing a service that helps them use their yards and be outside more often. I have several clients with children and pets that get so much more use out of their yards simply because the grass is short and they don't have to worry about bugs or hidden dangers. I love helping people be more comfortable in their own surroundings.
What areas do you mainly service?
We serve East Nashville, Inglewood, Madison, as well as Donelson and Lakewood.
